In the beginning of the story Esmeralda is very passionate about life in genera and hopeful that she will one day be reunited with her mother.

She soon becomes enamoured with Captain Phoebus De Chateaupers and is basically willing to give up her innocence and all hope of finding her parents for his ''love.''

A stor wouldn't be good without any conflict and of course things don't work out for our heroine. Esmeralda has another admirer, who is jealous of Phoebus. Dom Claude Frollo stabs Phoebus and leaves, so that the authorities believe Esmeralda did it. She gets arrested, put on trial, tortured and is thrown into a prison.

Even though Esmeralda goes through a lot of really bad stuff she still remains hopeful that Phoebus will comeand rescue her,
